How to set the scale on a PDF plan
Before you can measure anything to real dimensions on a PDF, you have to tell the software the drawing's scale. This is called calibration, and it takes about ten seconds. Here is how to do it, and how to check it.
Set the scale, step by step
- Find a known dimension. Pick something you can trust on the sheet: a dimension string, a standard door width, or a grid line spacing.
- Start the set-scale tool. Choose calibrate, then press at one endpoint of that known length and drag to the other before releasing.
- Type the real length. Enter the true distance, for example 10 feet. The software computes the scale from it, and every measurement after that reads in real feet.
- Or pick a standard scale. If the sheet is plotted to a standard scale, such as 1/8 inch equals 1 foot or 1:50 metric, choose that preset instead of calibrating.
- Verify it. Measure a second known dimension. If it reads correctly, the scale is set; if not, recalibrate.
Tips for an accurate scale
- Use the longest known dimension you can. A longer calibration line means less error.
- Check the scale note in the title block, and confirm the sheet was not printed at a reduced size.
- Recalibrate per sheet. Different sheets, and different page sizes, can carry different scales.
